How to Write a Follow-Up Email After an Interview

4 min read

A brief, thoughtful follow-up email after an interview is a small effort that leaves a strong impression — and surprisingly few candidates send one. Here is how to do it well.

Send it within 24 hours

While the conversation is still fresh for both of you, send a short thank-you to each person you met. If you only have one email address, send one note and mention the others by name.

What to include

  • A genuine thank-you for their time.
  • One specific thing from the conversation that stood out to you.
  • A brief line reinforcing why you are a strong fit.
  • A warm, low-pressure close.

If you don't hear back

It is completely fine to send one polite check-in about a week after the date they said they would decide. Keep it short and friendly. After that, it is best to wait — and keep applying elsewhere in the meantime.
