Cover Letter Template and Examples That Get Noticed

6 min read

A good cover letter does what a resume cannot: it connects your experience to this specific role and shows a little personality. It does not need to be long. Four short paragraphs will do — here is the structure and a template.

The four-paragraph structure

  1. Opening: name the role and say, in one line, why you are a strong fit.
  2. Proof: one or two achievements that match what the job needs most.
  3. Fit: why this company — show you have done a little research.
  4. Close: a confident thank-you and a clear next step.

Make the first line count

Skip "I am writing to apply for...". The reader knows. Open with something that earns the next sentence: a relevant result, a shared value, or a genuine reason you want this role. You have one line to make them keep reading.

Match your proof to the job

Pick the two or three requirements that matter most in the ad and give evidence you meet them. Do not restate your whole resume — choose the highlights that are most relevant to this employer and quantify them where you can.

Dear [Hiring Manager name],

I was excited to see the [Job Title] role at [Company]. With [X years] in [area] and a track record of [key strength], I believe I can help your team [specific goal from the ad].

In my current role at [Company], I [achievement with a number]. Before that, I [second achievement]. These are exactly the kinds of problems your [team/product] is working on.

What draws me to [Company] specifically is [genuine, specific reason]. I would welcome the chance to bring that same energy to your team.

Thank you for considering my application. I would love to discuss how I can contribute — I am available at your convenience.

Best regards,
[Your name]

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Addressing it "To whom it may concern" — find a name where you can.
  • Repeating your resume word for word instead of adding context.
  • Making it about what you want rather than what you offer.
  • Leaving in another company's name from a previous application.
